The Power of Words: How Affirmations and Mantras Help You
“Man’s word is his wand filled with magic and power”
-Florence Scovel Shinn
The power of the spoken word cannot be understated. Words are magical and powerful as they have the ability to create and build our lives; it is through words that we relate to one another, share our experiences with one another, and how we can connect to one another. Words can help to foster connection and create relationships. Words can also be used to tear others, ourselves, and our world down. It is for this reason, that we must be every aware of what we are speaking into our lives and the lives of others, because words are powerful and create the framework which builds our reality and our lives:
“ A person knowing the power of the word, becomes careful of his conversation…Through his spoken word, man is continually making laws [or karma] for himself” (Shinn 16).
Words spoken, good or bad, will create impact whether the speaker is aware or unaware. The words a person uses to describe others and themselves are like seeds that are being planted and will harvest good or bad fruit based on what seeds have been sown:
“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Holy Bible, Isaiah 55.11).
Words will go forth and produce results which is why we must be mindful of the words used if we want to produce positive results in our own lives. We can use the power of our words to create and build the lives we want for ourselves. We can use our words to create the positive shifts in our lives and our communities by speaking in a positive, affirmative way.
As we have just entered into a new year, now is the perfect time to be mindful of the words we are using and choose those words that will empower and strengthen ourselves. One way to use words to create positive change in your life is by using affirmations.
Affirmations and mantras, which are just statements usually spoken rhythmically or sung, can be repeated - over and over again. The idea is that with repetition you will train your subconscious mind to change your current state of being by changing your thoughts.
By changing your thoughts, you can and will change your perception. With a change in perception, you will shift how you see things, how you operate in the world, how others interact with you, and how you will attract the things you want more easily than before into your life.
During the first three months of the year, we are given an opportunity to begin something new. In a new year, we have the opportunity to reflect on those things that we would like to accomplish and begin to plan and create goals to accomplish those desires in the coming year. The job, situations, or people which do not bring us joy or fulfillment can be changed with affirmations and by using your wand, or words, to bring a change to your circumstances:
“So man has the power to change an unhappy condition by waving over it the wand of his word” (Shinn 81).
Now is the time to use your wand to plant the seeds for your best life; use your words and affirmations so that you can reap the harvest of your best life in the months and years to come.
